If your train ticket shows NDLS, you are travelling through one of the most important railway gateways in India’s capital. New Delhi Railway Station sits between the busy Paharganj and Ajmeri Gate areas and handles trains connecting Delhi with major cities and regions throughout the country. For a first-time passenger, however, the size of the station can be more important than its fame: arriving on the wrong side, relying on an old platform screenshot or reaching the station too close to departure can turn a straightforward journey into a stressful one.
This guide explains New Delhi Railway Station from a passenger’s point of view. You will learn how its two main sides differ, how to verify your platform, how the Delhi Metro connects with the station, what facilities are available, what has changed in crowd management and what is happening with the station’s redevelopment. Official railway information confirms that NDLS currently has 16 platforms, three foot overbridges and access from both the Paharganj and Ajmeri Gate sides.

New Delhi Railway Station Quick Facts
New Delhi Railway Station is identified by the station code NDLS and falls under the Northern Railway zone. Official information provided by the Ministry of Railways states that the station has 16 platforms, three foot overbridges and entrances from both sides of the railway complex. These details are particularly important because passengers sometimes confuse New Delhi Railway Station with Delhi Junction, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Anand Vihar Terminal or Delhi Sarai Rohilla.

The safest habit is to treat timetable and platform information as dynamic rather than permanent. Indian Railways’ official National Train Enquiry System provides tools including “Spot Your Train,” “Live Station” and train schedules, so checking shortly before leaving for the station is far more reliable than depending on an old blog post or social-media screenshot.

Why New Delhi Railway Station Matters
NDLS is not simply another Delhi railway stop. It serves as a major gateway for passengers moving between the national capital and destinations across north, east, west and central India. Northern Railway itself lists New Delhi among Delhi’s principal railway stations alongside Delhi Junction, Hazrat Nizamuddin and Delhi Sarai Rohilla.
Its importance is also visible in the scale of the government’s redevelopment plans. The Ministry of Railways has described proposals for larger station buildings on both sides, a spacious air concourse, modern passenger amenities, multimodal transport integration, parking and redesigned road access. The goal is therefore broader than renovating a few platforms: the project is intended to change how rail, Metro and road passengers move through this part of central Delhi.
For the everyday traveller, the station’s importance creates a practical trade-off. A large station provides extensive connectivity, but it can also mean longer walking distances, heavier traffic and larger crowds. A passenger boarding at NDLS should therefore think of arrival time, entrance choice and platform confirmation as part of the journey rather than as last-minute details.
Understanding the NDLS Station Layout
The most useful way to understand NDLS Railway Station is to picture it as a large railway complex with access from two principal city-facing sides: Paharganj and Ajmeri Gate. Both lead into the railway station, but they connect with different roads and surrounding neighbourhoods. Official railway information confirms access from both sides, and that distinction matters when you book a cab or ask someone to drop you at the station.
A common mistake is telling a driver only “New Delhi Railway Station.” That may be technically correct but operationally incomplete. If you already know which side is more convenient for your platform, Metro connection or hotel, specify Paharganj side or Ajmeri Gate side. Think of it like choosing the correct terminal entrance at an airport: arriving at the right building does not automatically mean you have arrived at the most convenient door.
Paharganj Side of New Delhi Railway Station
The Paharganj side is the western side of the railway complex and is closely associated with the Main Bazaar/Paharganj area. It has long been an important entrance for passengers arriving by road from central and western parts of Delhi. Because Paharganj contains a dense mix of hotels, shops and local traffic, road congestion can become a significant factor during busy periods.
As redevelopment work progresses, arrangements around individual entrances can also change. Reports in late 2025 stated that work had moved to the Paharganj side after upgrades on the Ajmeri Gate side, while Northern Railway continued issuing operational notices connected with station works in 2026.
For that reason, passengers using Paharganj should allow a margin for road congestion and security procedures. If your train is departing during a festival, weekend peak or evening rush, getting out of a cab at the station gate may take longer than the map distance suggests.
Ajmeri Gate Side of New Delhi Railway Station
The Ajmeri Gate side is especially useful for travellers connecting with the Delhi Metro. The New Delhi Metro station serves both the Yellow Line and Airport Express corridor, while DMRC has developed a dedicated skywalk connection intended to improve movement between the Metro complex and the railway station.
This side has also become important for crowd-management infrastructure. The Yatri Suvidha Kendra, a permanent passenger holding area at New Delhi Railway Station, was inaugurated in October 2025. Government information says the facility covers around 6,000 square metres, can accommodate roughly 7,000 passengers at a time, and includes ticketing areas, automatic ticket vending machines, toilets and free RO drinking water.
For someone arriving from Delhi Airport by Metro, Ajmeri Gate is generally the side that deserves particular attention because of this multimodal connection.
Platforms at New Delhi Railway Station
How many platforms are there at New Delhi Railway Station? New Delhi Railway Station currently has 16 platforms, according to the Ministry of Railways. The station also has three foot overbridges to help passengers move across the railway complex.
Knowing that your train uses NDLS is not the same as knowing its final platform. Indian Railways can change platform allocations for operational reasons, crowd control, late running, maintenance or special-train movements. This is why a platform number from an old timetable should be treated as an indication rather than a promise. Use the electronic information boards and station announcements after arriving, and check the official NTES service before the journey.
There is another practical point that inexperienced passengers sometimes underestimate: crossing from one part of a 16-platform station to another takes time, especially with children, elderly family members or heavy luggage. If an announcement changes your platform, move calmly and use the designated foot overbridge rather than rushing. During high-demand periods, railway authorities may also regulate passenger movement and access to platforms as part of crowd-control measures.
Major Train Connections From NDLS
New Delhi Railway Station is connected with a wide range of Indian destinations, and passengers will encounter everything from premium intercity services to long-distance express trains. Because train schedules change periodically and special trains are introduced during festivals or periods of heavy demand, publishing a fixed list of “all trains from NDLS” inside a general station guide would become outdated quickly. The more useful approach is to understand the types of services available and then verify the exact train for your travel date through official railway systems.
The Ministry of Railways regularly schedules additional services from Delhi-area stations during periods of exceptional demand. This highlights why date-specific checking matters: the number and pattern of trains serving New Delhi can look quite different during Holi, Diwali, Chhath or other major travel periods compared with an ordinary weekday.
Premium Trains From New Delhi
NDLS is strongly associated with some of Indian Railways’ best-known premium services, including trains from the Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Vande Bharat families. Individual train numbers, departure times, operating days and even terminals can change, so passengers researching a particular premium train should verify its current timetable instead of assuming that a previous year’s schedule remains valid.
This matters particularly in Delhi because several major railway terminals serve the city. A search result saying “Delhi” does not automatically mean New Delhi Railway Station. Before booking transport to the station, confirm that the boarding code printed on your ticket is NDLS rather than DLI, NZM, ANVT, DEE or another Delhi-area station. The small station code on a ticket can save a very large last-minute problem.
Long-Distance Connections From NDLS
New Delhi functions as a major long-distance rail gateway, making NDLS relevant for passengers travelling toward cities and regions across India. The station is consequently exposed to very large fluctuations in passenger demand, especially when holiday and festival traffic is concentrated around particular routes.
This is one reason the railway administration has strengthened passenger holding and access-management arrangements. Government sources say the new permanent holding facility at New Delhi can accommodate approximately 7,000 passengers and separates passenger movement into ticketing, post-ticketing and pre-ticketing zones. The model was considered successful enough that similar holding areas were approved for dozens of other stations.
For passengers, the message is simple: on extreme peak dates, station procedures may differ from an ordinary day. Follow official signs and staff directions instead of assuming you can walk directly to the platform immediately after entering the station.
Passenger Facilities at New Delhi Railway Station
A major terminal has to function almost like a small city. Passengers may need ticketing, drinking water, toilets, waiting areas, food, luggage assistance, digital train information and help when something goes wrong. Indian Railways’ station-development programme specifically identifies improvements such as waiting halls, toilets, lifts and escalators where required, free Wi-Fi, passenger-information systems, executive lounges and facilities for passengers with disabilities.
Not every facility should be assumed to be available in precisely the same location throughout redevelopment work. Construction phases can temporarily alter entrances or walking routes. Instead of memorising an old station map, use on-site signage and ask authorised railway personnel if you are unsure.
Waiting Areas, Food and Retiring Rooms
Passengers with a long connection or early-morning departure may find the waiting and accommodation question especially important. IRCTC currently lists NEW DELHI (NDLS) among stations available for online reservation of railway retiring rooms, subject to eligibility, room availability and the applicable booking rules.
The Yatri Suvidha Kendra adds a different kind of facility. It was created primarily to improve pre-boarding passenger flow and comfort during periods of high demand rather than functioning as a hotel or traditional retiring room. Official information says it includes toilets, ticket counters, automatic ticket-vending facilities and free RO drinking water, with capacity for around 7,000 passengers.
If you need accommodation rather than a waiting area, check IRCTC retiring-room availability before travelling. Availability can change, so a travel guide should not promise that a room will be available on arrival.
Accessibility and Passenger Assistance
Passengers with reduced mobility, elderly travellers and families carrying significant luggage should build additional walking time into their plans. The long-term station redevelopment programme specifically includes improved Divyangjan accessibility, lifts or escalators where required, better access routes and improved passenger-information systems.
For assistance during a journey, RailMadad remains an official Indian Railways grievance and assistance mechanism. The service identifies 139 as the integrated helpline for railway assistance, including security or medical requirements.
If you encounter an urgent problem, use official channels rather than relying solely on a social-media post. Keep your PNR, train number, coach and berth details handy because these details can make it easier to identify your journey when seeking help.
How to Reach New Delhi Railway Station
What is the best way to reach New Delhi Railway Station? For many travellers, the Delhi Metro is the most predictable option because New Delhi Metro Station directly serves the railway-station area and provides both Yellow Line and Airport Express connectivity. Road transport remains useful, especially with heavy baggage or for groups, but Delhi traffic can make road journey times less predictable.
Your best option depends on where you are starting. Someone coming from a Yellow Line station may find Metro access straightforward. Someone arriving at Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport has the Airport Express option. A family with several large suitcases may prefer a taxi despite traffic. There is no universally “best” mode; reliability, luggage, group size, time of day and entrance choice all matter.
Metro and Airport Express Connectivity
New Delhi Metro Station connects with the Yellow Line and Airport Express Line, making Metro one of NDLS’s biggest transport advantages. DMRC’s Airport Express information specifically identifies connectivity between New Delhi Railway Station and IGI Airport.
How long does the Airport Express take from New Delhi to Terminal 3? DMRC has stated that the faster operating speed introduced on the Airport Express reduced the New Delhi-to-Airport T3 journey to around 16 minutes. Actual door-to-door travel naturally takes longer because passengers must reach the Metro platform, wait for a train, walk through the interchange and complete railway or airport security procedures.
For a railway passenger arriving from the airport, the crucial lesson is not to treat “16 minutes” as the total transfer time. Allow a sensible buffer for luggage, walking and entry procedures.
Taxi, Auto-Rickshaw and Road Access
Taxis, app-based cabs and auto-rickshaws are practical options when you have bulky luggage, are travelling in a group or are starting from an area without convenient Metro access. The challenge is that the streets around Paharganj and Ajmeri Gate can become busy, and travel time can change sharply depending on traffic and passenger demand.
When booking a ride, enter the appropriate side of New Delhi Railway Station rather than using a generic destination whenever possible. This is particularly useful if your accommodation is near Paharganj or if you want convenient access toward the Ajmeri Gate/Metro side.
Avoid planning your arrival to the minute. A navigation app may estimate the drive correctly for ordinary traffic but cannot guarantee how long it will take to reach the exact drop-off point during a festival rush or temporary traffic restriction.
Crowd Management and Passenger Safety
Crowd management at NDLS deserves serious attention. On 15 February 2025, a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station resulted in 18 deaths and 15 injuries, according to information subsequently provided by the Ministry of Railways. The ministry later described measures including controlled access, permanent holding areas, wider foot overbridges, expanded camera monitoring, station-level command arrangements and stronger communication systems for high-crowd stations.
The permanent Yatri Suvidha Kendra that followed represents one of the most visible changes at New Delhi. It can hold approximately 7,000 passengers and was designed to separate different stages of passenger movement rather than allowing every waiting traveller to occupy the platform area at once.
For individual passengers, good safety practice is uncomplicated: avoid standing near platform edges, do not run after a platform announcement, keep children close, use designated bridges and follow queue or holding-area instructions. If your ticket is wait-listed or your train has not yet been opened for boarding, authorities may regulate where you can wait during exceptionally busy periods. Railway announcements and authorised staff instructions should take priority over crowd behaviour.
New Delhi Railway Station Redevelopment
The redevelopment of New Delhi Railway Station is much bigger than repainting the station façade. Official plans envision larger station buildings on both the Paharganj and Ajmeri Gate sides, a spacious air concourse, modern passenger amenities, a multimodal transport hub, parking and a combination of surface and elevated roads intended to improve access and reduce congestion around the station.
The redevelopment has evolved through several planning and tender stages over the years, which is why older articles can contain project costs, architectural designs or completion dates that no longer accurately represent the current package. The most reliable position for a 2026 guide is that redevelopment remains active. RLDA’s July 2026 publication continues to describe New Delhi Railway Station as a flagship redevelopment project, while Northern Railway notices in April 2026 referred to station redevelopment contracts covering the Paharganj and Ajmeri Gate sides.
Some passenger improvements are already tangible. The Yatri Suvidha Kendra was completed and opened in 2025, and earlier reporting indicated that Ajmeri Gate-side improvements had progressed while redevelopment work moved toward Paharganj.
This distinction matters for SEO accuracy. It would be misleading to write that the entire “new NDLS” is finished, just as it would be inaccurate to imply that nothing has changed. The station is operating while upgrades and broader redevelopment continue.
Practical Tips Before Travelling From NDLS
The best strategy for using a huge railway station is preparation rather than speed. Start by checking your ticket for NDLS and confirming that you have not confused it with another Delhi terminal. Then check your train’s latest status on Indian Railways’ NTES, which provides live-station, train-schedule and train-tracking information.
Arrive with enough spare time to find the correct entrance and platform without running. The exact margin depends on the traveller: an experienced solo passenger with a small bag needs less time than a family with children, elderly passengers and several suitcases. During Diwali, Chhath, Holi, school holidays or major religious travel periods, allow significantly more flexibility because railway authorities may introduce holding areas, queues, special entrances or other crowd-management arrangements.
Keep your ticket or PNR accessible rather than buried at the bottom of your luggage. Watch electronic boards and listen for announcements even if an app has already shown a platform. For railway assistance, remember 139 and the RailMadad system.
If travelling from IGI Airport, the Airport Express can be an efficient connection, but do not confuse the Metro journey time with your complete airport-to-platform transfer. Walking, baggage, security and waiting time all need to be included.
Finally, avoid depending on unofficial websites for time-sensitive platform information. A travel article is excellent for understanding the station; official railway systems should remain the final authority for today’s train operation.
Conclusion
New Delhi Railway Station is one of the most important gateways into India’s rail network, but using it comfortably depends on understanding a few practical details. Remember the station code NDLS, recognise the difference between the Paharganj and Ajmeri Gate entrances, and never assume that an old platform number is still valid. The station currently has 16 platforms and operates while a broader redevelopment programme continues.
Metro connectivity is one of NDLS’s biggest advantages, particularly because New Delhi Metro Station serves both the Yellow Line and Airport Express. New crowd-management infrastructure, including the approximately 7,000-passenger Yatri Suvidha Kendra, has also changed how heavy passenger flows can be handled.
Before travelling, check NTES for your train’s latest status, arrive with a sensible time buffer and follow official station information once inside. Those few steps can make a journey through a very large station considerably easier.

FAQ
1. What is the station code for New Delhi Railway Station?
The official station code for New Delhi Railway Station is NDLS. Check this code carefully on your ticket because Delhi has several major railway stations, including Delhi Junction, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Anand Vihar Terminal and Delhi Sarai Rohilla. Confirming NDLS before booking a cab or Metro journey can prevent you from travelling to the wrong terminal.
2. How many platforms are there at New Delhi Railway Station?
New Delhi Railway Station has 16 platforms. The Ministry of Railways also states that the station has three foot overbridges and access from both its Paharganj and Ajmeri Gate sides. Platform assignments may change, so verify your train’s platform on official displays, announcements and NTES before boarding.
3. Which Metro station is nearest to New Delhi Railway Station?
New Delhi Metro Station directly serves the railway-station area. It is connected to the Yellow Line and Airport Express Line, making it convenient for passengers arriving from different parts of Delhi as well as Indira Gandhi International Airport. The railway and Metro areas are connected on the Ajmeri Gate side.
4. How can I reach New Delhi Railway Station from Delhi Airport?
The Airport Express Metro provides direct connectivity between the airport corridor and New Delhi. DMRC has stated that the New Delhi-to-IGI Airport Terminal 3 Metro journey can take around 16 minutes under the faster operating schedule, although your complete airport-to-railway-platform transfer will take longer because of walking, waiting and security procedures.
5. Which side of New Delhi Railway Station is better: Paharganj or Ajmeri Gate?
Neither side is universally better. Paharganj can be convenient for hotels and destinations west of the station, while Ajmeri Gate is particularly useful for Metro and Airport Express connections. Your best entrance depends on your starting point, luggage and current station arrangements. Official railway information confirms that NDLS operates with access from both sides.
6. Does New Delhi Railway Station have retiring rooms?
Yes. IRCTC currently includes New Delhi (NDLS) in its online railway retiring-room reservation system. Booking depends on eligibility and room availability, and the applicable charges or rules can change. Passengers who specifically require accommodation should check IRCTC before travelling rather than assuming that a room will be available on arrival.
7. Is New Delhi Railway Station being redeveloped?
Yes. The station remains part of an active redevelopment programme. Official plans include larger station buildings, an air concourse, improved passenger amenities, multimodal integration and redesigned road access. RLDA continued to identify New Delhi Railway Station as a flagship redevelopment project in its July 2026 material.
8. Where can I check the latest NDLS train and platform information?
Use Indian Railways’ National Train Enquiry System (NTES) for train schedules, live-station information and train running status. Once at NDLS, also monitor station display boards and announcements because platform assignments can change operationally. For passenger assistance or complaints, RailMadad and railway helpline 139 are official channels.
